I obtained my master’s degree in North African and Middle Eastern Studies (NAMES) from Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, under the supervision of Professor Catherine Therrien. In my master’s thesis entitled «Transitional objects of sub-Saharan migrants in a context of mixed migration: remembering the past, stranded in the present, and dreaming of the future», I used material culture, memory, transnationalism and displacement to examine the materiality of migration. I conducted an ethnographic field trip with sub-Saharan migrants in the city of Fez, Morocco, to analyse the objects they brought with them as well as what they represent. During my studies at AUI, I was a research assistant and coordinator of the project on the identity of children of mixed couples in Morocco. Having always been interested in the theme of identity, this project allowed me to discover new identity issues, namely those of children of mixed couples, as well as their complexity. I also had the opportunity to develop my qualitative research skills in this project.
Currently, I am part of the project «Living on the Other Side: A Multidisciplinary Analysis of Migration and Family Law in Morocco», at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands. I am seeking to understand how sub-Saharan migrants in Morocco deal with major life events related to family law such as births, deaths, marriages and divorces. By examining the formal aspects of these events, my aim is to provide a socio-legal analysis of the practices of sub-Saharan migrants (regular and irregular) in this area.
